From the shameless self-promotion division...

...I am featured this week in the Flickr Group Spotlight Seven. From the group's description:

Each week, this group will feature portraits (or action shots or candids) from a different photographer from the 6 Million People group. That group is a collaborative effort collecting photographs of 6 million different people, one person at a time. This group, Spotlight for Seven is a spin-off. A different artist will be chosen each week to have his or her work displayed here, featuring 10 of their photos from the 6 Million People group. At the end of the week, the pictures remain and a new photographer will be in the spotlight.

Please stop by each week to look at the terrific portraits, talk about the pictures, ask the photographers questions and learn how to take better picture yourselves.

If you are interested in being highlighted, please add your name along with links to few of the shots you would include in the exhibit. The curator (smoothdude) will choose a new photographer each week. A complete archive of the featured artists is available. Thanks and enjoy!

Check out the thread, "Week 14: Michael Calanan" for my interview and discussion. If you'd like to participate in this project please see the 6 Million People Flickr Group for more information.

Coverage of Erin Westenskow Berrett's Gallery Opening

This past Friday I had the opportunity to photograph the gallery opening of Salt Lake City painter Erin Westenskow Berrett at Kayo Gallery (177 E 300 S). This was my first time attending SLC's monthly Gallery Stroll and I had a great time talking with Erin and Shilo (Kayo Gallery's owner) and their friends and family.

The subject of Erin's paintings were pairs of shoes and boots rendered in warm ochre tones, each roughly 2'x 2'. I liked Erin's choice to light her scenes in a harsh and direct manner, which as a photographer I found quite visually-interesting.

In covering the opening I shot both interactions between Erin and her guests...

Erin and guest Erin, discussing one of her paintings

...as well as photos of the gallery patrons admiring Erin's work.

I also shot a few images of the gallery itself to give a sense of place and to provide to Kayo Gallery for use on their web site.

More photos can be found here on my Flickr account.

Also, a great interview of Erin and Shilo by KUTV's Gavin Sheehan can be found here in Gavin's Underground.

Finally a big thanks to friend and fellow photographer Bryan Jones for asking me to cover this event on his behalf.

Flickr Video tour of the ranch

Quick video tour, testing out video uploads (and wresting with Microshit Movie Mangler). The camera (Panasonic DMC-FZ20) outputs video in .MOV with 8-bit 64K mono audio. I used RAD Video Tools to convert the MOV to AVI, which caused no conversion problems. However when placing the AVI on the Movie Maker 2.1 timeline it downsamples the audio causing it to become distorted and tinny (there are many forum posts about this like the one here). I had to use RAD VT to convert the video and audio separately (forcing the audio to remain 8-bit 64K mono) then import them onto the MM timeline in pieces. I was sloppy in my alignment as the audio is off a tad.

Anywho...If I do keep making video I promise they'll 1) get better and 2) not contain dog poop references.

I don't remember what we were all doing, probably recovering from a night of debauchery but as I sat perpendicular to the lads watching them ponder it struck me how cinematic this felt.
